Entrance
Canopy and totem luminaires that read from the sidewalk and are built for the street.
From the street entrance to the platform edge: more than 20 unique fixture types, a consolidated platform wireway that carries light, power and data in one extrusion, custom DALI-2 control and reporting, and IP65 / IK10 construction — engineered and manufactured in Central Islip, NY for NYCT’s Enhanced Station Initiative (ESI).

ESI treated each station as one lighting system rather than a list of fixtures. Clear-Vu designed and built a luminaire for every zone of that journey — entrance, control area, stairs, passageways and platform — plus the wireway that ties them together.

High-uniformity ceiling fixtures over fare control, with DALI-2 reporting back to the station.

Continuous linear runs along stair canopies for even tread illumination.

Clean ceiling lines that light wayfinding and artwork without visual clutter.

The ESI platform assembly: fixtures, drivers, emergency battery and wireway in one extrusion.
Clear-Vu designed, manufactured and delivered the lighting for 13 stations under three ESI contracts in the program’s first 18 months (2018–2019), with over 20 unique fixture types, custom DALI-2 integration for control and reporting, and IP65, IK10, FCC EMI and NYCT 16ES compliance.

The platform consolidated wireway system puts the L3 / L3E platform fixtures, the L6 driver boxes, the emergency battery packs and the station wireway into a single 20.8-inch-wide, 6.5-inch-tall black extruded-aluminum profile. It hangs on slideable clevis hangers at 5 ft maximum spacing and is assembled in 15 ft (180 in) runs, so the platform ceiling reads as one continuous line.

Suspended from the platform ceiling on clevis hangers, the assembly replaces separate conduit, fixtures and raceway with one serviceable black line above the platform edge.

On the elevated Astoria line the platform consolidated wireway mounts beneath the canopy, with the same IP65 gasketing and black finish throughout.
Station power, emergency and communications circuits ride in separate compartments of one extruded raceway. Clear-Vu fabricates the straight sections, the angled transitions that follow the structure, and the tap boxes that break out to each fixture — all finished to match the fixtures.

Custom-angled transitions and tap boxes, fabricated to the station drawings.

Two-, three- and four-compartment extrusions in multiple profiles.

Field-fitted around existing structure, conduit and signal equipment.

Transitions step with the ceiling so the raceway stays continuous and accessible.

The functional aspects of passenger station design focus on movement, safety and comfort. Signage and visual landmarks are key aspects of directional navigation, and they should be free of extraneous and distracting visual information. Visual clutter and confusion created by advertising, signage, concessions, conduits and service equipment should be minimized or eliminated.
The final goal of passenger station design is to provide guidance, optimize reliability and efficiency, simplify communication, enhance the user experience, unify the system, bring awareness of unique station characteristics, and connect the station and the city with safety and security.
Passenger station lighting fixtures should be robust, energy efficient, easily cleanable, durable, and replaceable if damaged.
The LED light sources need to produce high-quality lighting — high CRI, uniform color temperature, and longevity.
Luminaire testing to assure performance should include temperature and vibration testing, ingress (IP65) and impact (IK10) verification, EMI testing, and LM-79 / LM-80 photometric and lumen-maintenance data.
Clear-Vu’s legacy station line covers NYCT Specification 16HS: 4 ft and 6 ft LED tube fixtures in standard and vandal-resistant versions, hybrid emergency lighting (ELM) on 120 VAC standard with 600 VDC traction power and a 4-hour battery, and 600 V back-of-house (CBH) fixtures. Documentation for the installed base stays online.
